Beaches of Faial & the North Coast of Madeira

Madeira is famous for the natural pools of Porto Moniz and its pebble beaches — and the north of the island has some of the best. In Faial, the ocean is right next door, with options for everyone: calm bathing in natural pools, dark volcanic pebbles and even surf on wavy days.

Alagoa Beach

About 2.5 km from Paraíso Resiliente, Alagoa Beach is one of the most beautiful on the north coast: golden pebbles, clean water and a landscape of green cliffs. It has supervised bathing in high season and is perfect for a calm morning or an evening picnic.

Maiata Beach

2.8 km away, Maiata is a smaller, wilder beach, also of pebbles, tucked between the cliffs. Less crowded than Alagoa, it is the right choice for those seeking quiet and a quick swim.

Faial natural pools

Along the coast of Faial there are natural sea-water pools — small rock-carved pools where the water warms up and stays calm. They are a safe alternative for families with children and for days when the sea is rough.

• Bring water shoes: pebbles and rocks get hot and slippery
• On the north coast the sea can be rougher — respect the flags and signage
• Most beaches have no natural shade; bring a hat and sunscreen
• May to October are the best months for swimming on the north coast
